- The USSR/U.S. Dialogue on Human Rights, 1986-1990

In their capacities as USSR deputy foreign minister and
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian
Affairs, respectively, Anatoly Adamishin and Richard Schifter
were key participants in forging an unprecedented dialogue
about human rights which became pivotal in transforming relations
between the USSR and the USA and ending the Cold War.
As they reconstruct those historically unique developments,
they also share an assessment of the lessons that their experiences
might offer for today.

Twelve years after a cease-fire, positions on both sides of the conflict continue to harden, and questions arise about the way forward.

With the talks on the future status of Kosovo well underway, questions arise about the divided city of Mitrovica. The Mitrovica challenge will be one of the toughest tests in preserving Kosovo's multi-ethnicity and territoriality.

Ireland Peace Process

Senior Fellow Stephen Farry will discuss the challenges of implementing
the Good Friday Agreement and explain why it contributed to
deeper communal divisions and to increased political polarization.
Dr. Farry was involved in the negotiations that led to the
Good Friday Agreement, and worked with the British, Irish,
and American governments in subsequent talks to realize the
implementation of those accords. Currently, he is the General
Secretary of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, and has
also served as a member of North Down Borough Council (in
suburban Belfast) since 1993, including a term as deputy mayor.
Farry has also worked as a pro bono trainer and consultant
on four projects in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina for Washington's
National Democratic Institute.
He received his Ph.D. on the United Nations, collective security
and the national interest from Queen’s University of
Belfast.
