Manager, Inventory AccountingMervyns LLC, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a family-friendly promotional neighborhood department store offering trend-right fashions and home decor. We are currently looking for an outstanding candidate for this position in the Finance area of our Corporate Headquarters in Hayward, California.POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager of Inventory Accounting is responsible for following key areas:
Management and administration of all accounting for gross margin.
Managing the entire physical inventory process including the development of store and DC accruals, procedures, relationship with the inventory service, book-to-physical inventory reconciliation, and the final booking of inventory results.
Initiating and coordinates analyzing and solving strategic policy decisions/implementations and the impact they may have on Gross Margin and/or shortage, enabling Management to make informed decisions.POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal control procedures through accurate recording of gross margin
Oversee balancing and control procedures to ensure that all source system feeds to the stock ledger are complete and accurate. Ensure any variances are properly researched and corrected on a weekly basis.
Identify risks and develop controls to ensure continued accurate and complete stock ledger reporting.
Review the monthly gross margin calculation and understand any variances between the stock ledger and the general ledger (GL). Manage the shortage accrual process to accurately reflect shortage based on current inventory shortage trends.
Ensure that senior management is kept apprised of significant gross margin issues or changing shortage trends.
Review all significant stock ledger adjustments to ensure completeness and that the impact on margin occurs as expected.
Manage any inventory related reporting required for tax returns.2. Ensure that the Retail Stock Ledger maintains accurate inventory levels through the physical inventory process.
Manage the development and maintenance of the physical inventory schedule.
Manage the development of annual shortage accrual rates for both Merchandising and Stores. Periodically review the accrual to determine appropriateness.
Ensure continuous improvement of the inventory taking process through development of best practices, building a strong working relationship with the service provider(s) and communicating clear procedures to Logistics and Stores.
Ensure the highest level of customer service is provided to the stores and DC's for their physical inventories and any other inventory related issues that arise throughout the year.
Identify, test, evaluate and develop new methods for taking inventory using technology and cross-divisional teamwork.
Manage the reconciliation process for inventory results of stores and DC's.
Manage the reporting of shortage results for stores and DC's.3. Provide ad-hoc inventory, gross margin, and shortage analysis and reporting for senior management, Stores, Asset Protection, Merchandising and other customers to help Mervyn's meet its goals.4. Oversee the monthly forecast process to ensure accuracy and completeness. Forecast is prepared both for Merchant Forecast and for Corporate Forecast.5. Initiates and coordinates analyzing and solving strategic policy decisions/implementations (i.e. merchant reorganizations, GAAP accounting changes, etc) and the impact they may have on margin and/or shortage ,enabling Management to make informed decisions and understand ramifications of the change.6. Ensures all published reporting produced by staff is complete, accurate, and timely.7. Leads in the financial interpretation of new business initiatives or financial recoveries and understands the impact on gross margin and financial results.POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
MBA or CPA preferred or commensurate work experience
6+ years experience in a large corporate retail finance organization or similar experience in public accounting required. Experience should be in a large organization with sophisticated systems.
Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
Excellent computer skills
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
A team player
Strong leadership, administrative and management skills, complemented by good problem-solving and analytical capabilities. Must be able to coordinate complicated processes and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Good understanding of both PC and mainframe systems required to manage complex accounting and reporting tools.
Ability to communicate complex retail accounting concepts to non-financial audiencesBENEFITS:
