Department: Member Relations



Schedule: Full-time regular, 40 hours/week; Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.



Education: Bachelor's degree and experience in journalism, public relations, communications or

related field.



Licensure/Certification: N/A



Qualifications: Extensive (usually 10+ years) experience in media relations in corporate, agency or

health care setting in a large, complex organization, including experience serving as a spokesperson

to the media. Five years of demonstrated success in managing a staff. Proficient in print and

electronic media news gathering techniques, story development, etc. Familiarity with health care

industry and issues in California. Established relationships with California news media. Strong

public speaking skills; journalistic writing skills. Negotiation, conflict resolution, leadership,

critical thinking, influencing, problem-solving and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to build

consensus on strategies and messages among peers and across different reporting structures. Project

management skills. Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.



Preferred Qualifications: Experience as a working journalist preferred. Communication planning for a

variety of stakeholders, executive communication and speech-writing experience.

Duties: Leads the development and implementation of the Region-wide media relations program to

effectively represent Kaiser Permanente from a comprehensive, integrated and regional perspective as

the health quality and service leader in Northern California. Develops and coordinates strategy and

communication planning for effective relations with the news media and external stakeholder

audiences. Has a lead role in region-wide reputation and issues management, overseeing and

coordinating media relations work. Works in coordination with Corporate Communications and other

regional communication functions, area communication colleagues, Program Office and other regions to

develop integrated approaches to representing KP with all stakeholders. Establishes and cultivates

relationships with regional and national media covering health care and Kaiser Permanente. Serves as

the organization's designated spokesperson and works with other organization spokespersons for a

consistent approach. Prepares senior leadership and others for interactions with the news media -

advising about strategy, issues management, reputation implications and key messages. Successfully

cultivates relationships with a broad range of internal stakeholders. Develops an annual media

strategy and plan including key messages and opportunities for positive coverage and plans in

support of specific strategic activities, projects and issues. Develops policies and practices

governing Kaiser Permanente Northern California's interaction with the media (media relations

policy, crisis communication plan, etc.) Participates and/or leads situation and crisis management

and organization wide disaster planning. Supervises media relations staff throughout Northern

California, and works with Program Offices and other regions on related issues and programs.

Develops and maintains a high performing media relations function: leveraging and aligning resources

to ensure effective and robust function; building a performance-oriented culture characterized by

enthusiastic, motivated staff who feels accountable for operating as a team and meeting customer

needs; directing the appropriate retention and development of staff. Oversees the management of all

internal systems necessary to effectively track, communicate and plan for media coverage (media

databases, background information, clippings retrieval and communications, etc.) Participates in

issues tracking and management to prepare for future communication needs. Manages, as necessary,

outside support services and agency-freelance relationships.



Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente's Code of

Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the

organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable

federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if

applicable), and Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures.
