Construction And Building Opportunities
Worldwide. Position will require relocating.
Amazing efficiency, teamwork and reliability tailored with a can-do spirit and a drive to build almost anything anywhere make this field an essential part of the Navy. Whether designing a high-tech communications center in the middle of the jungle or drawing blueprints for a port facility in the Pacific Islands, Sailors in the Construction and Building community offer the technical, analytical and creative building skills needed by the Navy. A passion for creating, as well as an ability to solve problems quickly, might make this occupational specialty the one for you.
What Will You Do?
Each year the Navy completes hundreds of construction, renovation, maintenance and building projects all over the world. You may find yourself surveying a critical airstrip location or conducting laboratory tests on soil samples for an amphibious landing zone. Or you may piece together satellite images to form large image maps of a foreign town destroyed by an earthquake or flood, providing important information for rescue and rebuilding efforts. The duties found in this field call for detail-oriented, resourceful and creative personnel and are of the utmost importance to the Navy. As a member of this field, you might be called on to:
Prepare technical illustrations and graphs
Assist construction engineers in developing final construction plans
Conduct land surveys and prepare maps, sketches, drawings and blueprints
Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, forklifts, cranes and asphalt equipment
Perform interior finish work, such as installing sheet-rock, paneling, ceramic tile, ceiling and floor tile, millwork and trim
Interpret blueprints
Install, operate or repair heating or air conditioning systems
Handle welding or repair equipment
Operate power production and electrical distribution systems
Install wiring or electrical equipment
Adjust ignition, fuel, electrical or hydraulic steering systems
If you've already obtained your Civil Engineering degree, the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps (CEC) provides opportunities for bright engineers and architects to manage multimillion-dollar construction projects or operate and maintain shore installations.
Educational Opportunities
Much of the training received in this field translates into semester credit hours in bachelor's and associate's degree programs. You might also have the opportunity for continued education through various college programs and/or tuition assistance.
Skills and Training
The Construction and Building occupational specialty is your chance to learn from the best while working with the most advanced heavy equipment and specialized tools available. Your training is a combination of classroom and field training. Some field training might include area mapping, preparing building sites, drawing blueprints, testing soils, operating heavy equipment or overseeing entire construction operations. Some skills you learn may even earn you Department of Labor certifications such as:
Hydroelectric Machinery Mechanic
Diesel Mechanic
Automobile Mechanic
Construction Operating Engineer
Architectural Drafter
Illustrator
Electric Motor Repairer
Sheet Metal Worker
Refrigeration Mechanic
As part of the Construction and Building field, you may perform your job as a member of the legendary "Fighting Seabees." The Seabees are the Navy's front-line construction battalion. They provide a vital link between land and sea by constructing buildings, ports and other structures required for the Navy's ships, aircraft, support machinery and personnel.
Career Outlook
Construction is one of the economy's largest industries and has a very large percentage of self-employed individuals working in higher-paying jobs. So, whether it's a promotion in the Navy or taking your skills into the civilian world, the fundamentals of construction and building you'll learn in the Navy will be instrumental in the advancement of your career as well as your life!
Worldwide. Position will require relocating.

"We were out in the Mediterranean and our ship was in need of a part that was no longer manufactured. I was called down to the engine room to sketch the part and its functionality to the system. We then wired the drawing to a ship parts plant in England. They followed my drawing, made the part our ship needed and sent it to us within a few days. It was good to know my drawing ability helped my crew and my ship get back to operating at full steam!"
