DEPARTMENT: Behavioral Health Education
SCHEDULE: On Call; 0 hours per week; Evening/Variable Shift; Hours and days may vary depending upon
departments operational need.
EDUCATION: Licensed Mental Health Professional preferred; advanced degree in Psychology, Health
Education, or related field. Documented skills and experience may be substituted for advanced
degree/credentialing.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: n/a
QUALIFICATIONS: Prior work experience (minimum one year,) teaching classes in the topic area. (e.g.
Anger management, Mindfulness Meditation, Stress Management, Insomnia, Parenting Children with ADHD,
etc.) Knowledge of adult learning theory, group process, cognitive behavior therapy, and
solution-focused brief therapy. Experience in teaching relaxation/stress reduction techniques,
communication skills, self-care and goal setting. Group/facilitation process skills; Competences in
helping clients to explore, clarify, and solve problems in a focused area of concern; Ability to
help clients set goals and follow action plans; Delivery of appropriate therapeutic intervention if
client is in a crisis, and Modeling of warmth, genuineness, and empathy as encouragement to a
client's positive change process.

DUTIES: Responsible for teaching Behavioral Health Education classes to Kaiser members and
non-members, according to standardized curriculum for the topic area; Disseminates current
information regarding concepts, skills and resources relevant to the topic area. The role of the
Instructor is to facilitate a didactic, experiential and participatory exchange with members
enrolled in Behavioral Health Education classes. This includes teaching coping and life skills such
as cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, stress management, self-care, nutrition and
exercise. Instructs class members in designated topic area, following designated Kaiser curriculum.
Answer questions and refers class members to appropriate resources. Assist class participants in
developing specific, behavioral goals, using relevant skills. Assesses needs of individuals and
adapts class content to meet those needs. Provides individual instruction and counseling as
necessary. This may include follow-up phone calls to participants who miss a class session.
Incorporates evidence-based education techniques into teaching style. Models skills taught in class
curriculum for the topic area. Maintains file of paperwork on class participants, including
attendance list and homework assignments. In some cases, collects class fees and turns them over to
Behavioral Health Education Asst. Manager or her/his designee. Maintains knowledge of Kaiser and
community resources and encourages utilization of and refill to resources. Administers and collects
class evaluation forms and forwards to BHE Department. Prepares for Behavioral Health Education
classes, (e.g. arranging class room and audio/visual equipment, ensuring availability of necessary
audio/visual aids and participant handouts.)
Some of the class topics for which we are hiring Instructors include: Anger Management, Couples
Communication, Insomnia classes, Using Mind Body Medicine for Stress Reduction, Mindfulness
Meditation, and Parenting a Child with ADHD. There may be some travel, as Instructors are needed in
Vallejo, Vacaville and Napa.
