We have an excellent opportunity for an Underwriter for personal Lines for New
Jersey Skylands Insurance Company in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. New Jersey
Skylands Insurance Company was created specifically to meet the needs of New
Jersey's personal insurance marketplace. Together we insure more than 50,000
Garden State families and their 86,000 vehicles.
Principle duties and responsibilities:
The Underwriter will be responsible for providing underwriting, technical
support, and service to assigned agents. Monitors and evaluates results of
assigned agents and assigned territory. Recommends and implements action plans
for improvement of underwriting results for assigned agents and assigned
territory.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Continuously examines, identifies, and evaluates exposures by analyzing
documentation from various sources (e.g. application, inspection reports, credit
reports, etc.) and makes underwriting decisions to accept decline or modify
risks within assigned territory. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance
with state laws.
2. Develops positive working relationships with agents, and with internal and
external partners, to successfully promote achievement of mutual operating goals
and to supply the appropriate products and services.
3. Collaborates with team members to manage work inventories and all production
activities to provide accurate and timely service in accordance with corporate
standards.
4. Processes underwriting decisions and documents files and reports via
automated desktop systems and tools.
5. May review the work of others to ensure that compliance, quality, and
authority levels are appropriate.
Decision-Making Authority/Accountability Level:
Has the assigned authority to accept, decline and modify policies that provide
coverage against risks of loss. Decisions have direct impact on the bottom line.
Must be fully versed in insurance contracts, state insurance laws, corporate
underwriting positions, and corporate agency management philosophy.
Underwriting decisions significantly impact the financial results of the region,
personal lines, and the company.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:
Must be able to identify and describe the major perils insured under P/L
policies. Ability to identify and describe the exposures and hazards to consider
in making an underwriting decision is essential. Must know how to obtain
information needed to make an underwriting decision. Must have proven technical,
analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, organizational, and
teamwork skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
Education and Experience Preferred:
Bachelors degree preferred.
1-3 years of experience.
Professional insurance designation is preferred (e.g., AICPCU designation).
Supervisory Responsibility:
None, but may provide guidance and act as a coach to junior staff.
Necessary Tasks:
Computer use required more than 50% of the work day. Phone use required 20% to
25% of the work day. Must be able to read data from a computer screen or from
documents.
Must be capable of some business travel.
