Policy Director, Connected Life Products

The role of Policy Director, Connected Life, is a new position within Y!. This role will be the conduit between the Yahoo! Policy Team and the Connected Life business unit for all policy issues, most importantly privacy and communications, but also issues related to child safety & content and accessibility for disabled consumers. This role involves operating in an emerging policy and product arena where best practices are not yet established. There is also a large international component in work with the Connected Life group. Strong leadership skills and an ability to create order out of chaos are essential for success in this position. This is a challenging opportunity for the right person. This role reports to the Senior Director of Privacy and Product Policy.

Responsibilities include:
* Developing Y! best practices and standards for privacy disclosure within non-PC and mobile environments;
* Developing data usage policies appropriate to the source and nature of such data;
* Guiding Y! policy on geo-location data and coordinating its usage across Y!'s various businesses;
* Working closely with Connected Life business partners in the telecommunications, mobile carrier, and mobile device manufacturer industries;
* Coordinating international policies for data usage and communications and recommending the appropriate floor/ceilings for each;
* Participating in industry coalitions and leading initiatives to form best practices for the mobile and non-PC industries in marketing and data usage;
* Working closely with other members of the Policy Team to escalate policy issues as necessary and to ensure consistency whenever possible with our network approach to policy;
* Translating existing best practices from the PC-based Internet experience to a non-PC or mobile environment as appropriate;
* Evangelizing and advocating policy principles throughout the Connected Life business unit.

Qualified candidates will possess the following skills and qualities:
* Ability to work with strong business leaders in a quickly changing business and regulatory environment;
* Ability to communicate and distill very complex issues into straight-forward, easy to understand recommendations that can be conveyed both in writing and verbally.
* Awareness of state, federal and international regulatory environments, existing industry guidelines and "best practices," and competitors' policies regarding use of customer data, privacy, communications/marketing and security.
* Familiarity with privacy and communication best practices for existing online and offline media, including emerging best practices in the mobile environment.
* Ability to multitask and prioritize projects, as well as the ability to appropriately manage expectations and make difficult judgment calls.
* Excellent people skills are required in order to work with Yahoos across the organization - sales, marketing, legal, customer care, product teams, as well as external partners and clients.

The following background and experience are helpful:
* Six to eight years of experience in the telecommunications or regulatory organization, or policy compliance function within a company with a significant online or mobile presence;
* Deep and broad understanding of Yahoo! products and services and telecommunication issues;
* Legal background or experience a significant plus however a legal degree is not required;
* Qualified candidates must be able to work closely with legal counterparts and must be very comfortable with contracts, regulation, and legal notices.
