Commercial Underwriter
Responsibilities
Underwrite more complex commitments, policies, and endorsements such as those concerning commercial property, construction loans, reinsurance, coinsurance, sale lease-back, extended coverage, and those concerning exceptional policy liability
Examine information written by company examiners and approved attorneys regarding status of title to real property to determine its insurability
Determine status of title to real property
Receive files and review information and documentation to ensure file is accurate and premium is correct
Confer with attorneys, real estate agents, loan officers, and the general public to provide information and services in connection with the insuring of real property title
Instruct on completing forms, quote premium rates, discuss details pertaining to status of a case
Work with customers and attorneys in removing defects or clearing exceptions which affect title status
Keep records of commitment or commitments and policies issued and make periodic reports of work processed
May supervise lower-level underwriters and typists
Minimum Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of the purpose and terminology of legal instruments affecting title to real property; of land recording, legal descriptions, policy and commit ments procedures, special coverages, and underwriting practices
Ability to organize workload and perform detail work; to compose correspondence; and to meet and deal effectively with other employees and the public
Ability sufficient to supervise and perform the work of analyzing documents recorded in connection with more complex transactions and ascertain that they comply with the requirements set out on the commitments
Ability to use a high level of judgment where situations are somewhat diverse in nature
Ability to operate a personal computer and to use common office suite software
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in person and by telephone
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience related to title insurance work, chiefly in commercial title insurance underwriting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
